LEDs are FAR brighter and last longer. Not all are expensive, either. Harbor Freight carries the 4 inch round stop/turn LEDs (part number 93263) used on almost all the tractor trailers for $19.99 each ($12.99 to $16.99 when on sale - like right now). I put a pair on a boat trailer in 2006 and they are still good as new, despite repeated dunking in salt water.
