Anyways, it's great that your learning and working on your own stuff! Cool!
But since your in the learning mode, it's best to learn the right way to do things, as opposed to the halfa$$ed way! ( no offense Dad!)
Hey, there's plenty of good advice ( along with some bad) on this site that comes from true "legends in their own minds" as well as good mechanics! ( I hate the word techni......)
So.... next time ya got a project to work on, ask, ask, ask, before you tear into that puppy. ( if ya did in any previous posts, I musta missed em)
Generally, before I tear into an engine for a rebuild I usually do the following:
1. Pressure wash / clean it externally.
2.Pull the muffler and carb and check for any oil in either.
3.Pull the plug and check ( kinda goes without saying)
4. Check the valve clearance.( for the next step)
5. Do a leakdown test. OR use an airline with a rubber tipped blowgun AND a regulator to push air in the cyl and check for any leaks. ( more on that later)
6. Rotate the flywheel away from the coil ( if still attached) and shake it back and forth to check for excessive radial play or shake. Too much and you know right off the bat that you've got major problems.
7. Grab the PTO end of the crank and push and pull to check for excessive end-play
Some mechanics do more, some less.
The actual rebuild can get pretty involved at times.( If done the right way)
I'm hoping that some of the other mechanics can guide you thru the other steps involved.
One things for sure, you need to get your grubby paws on a shop/service manual for WHATEVER yer workin' on!
