It all depends on how and what you're pruning... I typically prune in the Fall for a one-time deal, with a power hedge trimmer... Some need to have dead wood removed along with old wood, requiring loppers... cross branching needs to be cleaned up on some plants more than others...

Clean up is the biggest time consumer and the most tedious part of the job... if they have much in there and you're pruning in the middle of the growing season, you are looking at endless irritation...
