A fella described to me once, the Method that lumberjacks use to fell those huge Pines etc. in the timberlands... I had an old dying Red Oak that must've been over 40" because my 18" bar didn't reach the middle of the tree at all...

I was out in the woods so there was nothing to damage other than myself and the saw... by playing out the strategy of the Method in my mind I was able to bring it down, almost perfectly...

I say "almost" because at the end of the cut I had to add another cut to make it 'spin' into position to fall where I wanted it too...
