Lawns, is the Scag original to you? If not, the previous owner may have replaced the dipstick with one from another Kaw model----or I've also seen dipsticks that have broken off at the cap, the broken piece pulled out of the cap and the shortened dipstick reinserted in the cap. Just a SWAG(scientific wild a$$ed guess).
Slapper, maybe it's just to early in the morning for an old fart like me, but if the engine has the proper amount of oil, won't the dipstick show overfilled if it's turned onto the fill tube?
Oil usage(worn rings/pistons) and overfuelling will also contribute to premature oil darkening as well.
