I can't believe the downspout locations on that house and the way they angle away from the wall.

Any way taller shrubs in front of higher windows as was pointed out. Try to take cues from the building and grade of the land.

Thing I have seen is people put in a bed full of shrubs. Then put an ornamental tree (that winds up growing to big) close enough to the bed that there is too much shade and the lawn suffers in that area.

Why put all that care to plant a bed then hide it behind a tree?
