I dont know if this is a clear answer, but the engineer has us install the fabric in the shape of a "C", with the open part of the "C" facing the back of the block.

And as far as effectveness - I honestly have no idea. See, with this wall, in some places the grid was 10' long and the drainage chimney was no more than 24", so it's my unfounded personal opinion that the grid still did it's job.
