We do the normal pruning after they flower and then throughout the year just prune broken branches diseased branches shoots and suckers etc. We wont do a full pruning where we thin it out etc because then they wont flower

I was thinking the same thing. Once over just after blooms are spent and then small hand clipping for overgrowth or dead limbs
