"alt" is short for "alternative". It adds context to the image. Without it, search can't tell if a picture is of a duck or sod installation, nor can a text reader used by the visually impaired.
Example 1: <img src="lawn.jpg" />
Example 2: <img src="lawn.jpg" alt="Sod installation in Chippewa Falls" />
If I'm a search bot or a blind person, which one is helpful?
