Well, if the gas causes the glue to fail, it will probably just peel off, so that shouldn't stop you from welding the plastic down the road. The bigger issue with welding a gas tank, is the hazard of the gas itself.

There's a big difference between "gas resistant", and something that can be used to repair a gas tank, but please report back in a few months, if your results were successful.
