Emotions and the Senses
I think sometimes we, as lighting designers, fail to fully credit ourselves for the emotional and multi-sensorial impact of our designs.
We do far more than illuminate the landscape - it's more than just a visual experience for the viewer. When we illuminate aromatic plants, the viewer recalls the scent and that becomes part of the experience. In the same way, illuminating the textures evokes tactile memories. Illuminating rustling leaves or swaying palms gives visual clues to the sounds of nature.
An experience of sight, smell, touch, and sound has a far greater emotional impact than one might expect from mere light.
When a satisfied client is ecstatic after a successful lighting project, it is quite likely that the experience goes far beyond light and has touched the person deeply on many levels.
Landscape lighting has tremendous emotional impact and we shouldn't be shy about sharing this fact with prospective clients.
