Yellowing could mean too wet and too cool for the plants to utilize the available nutrients... the strong will survive and the overcrowded weak will perish and their dead bodies will be recycled into OM nutrient source for the others...

Feed the lawn N when it is ACTIVELY Growing and let the chips fall where they may... We have lawns that are SO THICK that no weeds stand a chance and the lawn does great,,, year after year... Give it TIME...
Now that I know that clay's texture(platelets) has nothing to do with water infiltration, percolation, or drainage
