I actually used my manual plug'r to bring up 3" of his top soil and root zone... It meant NOTHING to him...

Understanding soil texture, soil structure, and tilth is necessary to diagnose anything... I'm with you... not too difficult to come up with possible solutions when you're actually looking at the dirt...
