Smarter transformers. Maybe wifi integrated. We were on a Zwave kick years ago, but that proved to be unreliable. We have a couple clients that went wired automation, but I'm talking real basic wifi in a transformer. Secure link you can access from either the home network or even the internet. Would not be hard and would only add a minimal cost compared to home automation. The challenge I see is electronic functionality in cold weather and signal loss due to interference issues.
