help determing square footage for fertilizer

hey guys, i know its an obvious rule multiply length by width and that's the answer: for instance, a 50 ft wide lawn by 100 ft long lawn that's square would equal 5,000 square feet. Unfortunately, they aren't all this easy. how about the lawns that have odd landscapes, objects in the yard, and isn't square but has multiple sections and shapes? Then: once i find the square footage, have you guys found a good way to spread fertilizer to save as much of it as you can and not be wasteful and be able to leave a nice even spread throughout the entire yard? just go back and forth or diagonal. thanks
