Southern Flying Squirrels are fairly common in suburbs close to conservation areas. I doubt a sugar glider would survive long, they are pretty domesticated.

You're right they probably wouldn't live long. I've seen sugar gliders twice and heard them a couple more times. It's in a wooded area right between a commercial district and a residential home where the homes back up to the woods. Probably either escaped or where let go.
I've yet to see a flying squirrel in the wild. I am seeing a lot more cypress fox squirrels.
