The crown is the base of the trunk that starts to flare as it transistions into roots...
Ideally, the flare sits at ground level and is at least partially visible... too deep and the tree dies...

If they're maple it is probably NOT a graft,,, but just sucker branch that was removed at the nursery...
Now that I know that clay's texture(platelets) has nothing to do with water infiltration, percolation, or drainage
,,, I wonder what does...
