Forward pitch allows the leading edge to engage and cut the grass. If the blade is level it will create more drag on the engine, and use more fuel to boot. I've read up to about 10% more fuel consumed.

One quick and dirty blade check is to pull the machine backward (or use reverse if applicable). and see if it cuts better backward (illustrating that the blades are pitched the wrong direction.)

Alas, I think most of this is unneeded in your case. Try pulling the mulch plug while running those gators. I think you'll be happy with the results. This is after all the chosen technique of the majority of pros.
