Looks like some sort of juniper and it appears there was damage to a branch at the point near the trunk or damage to a root that feeds that branch near the soil surface... my guess is that if you investigate you'll find either a break or rodent damage...
Now that I know that clay's texture(platelets) has nothing to do with water infiltration, percolation, or drainage
,,, I wonder what does...
