The idea of a four foot deep hole and the 'settling' issue to follow is a valid concern... I be sure to loosen the soil directly under the root ball but only enough to soak up lots of water and allow root penetration to start immediately...

The depth of the hole,,, should be determined by the depth of the root ball and the type of soil(texture) you're planting in... I would run the augur through the 182 holes ,,, at about 2.5 ft. deep,,, and then go back and start planting the trees...

How long is it going to take ,,, just to augur 182 holes???
Now that I know that clay's texture(platelets) has nothing to do with water infiltration, percolation, or drainage
,,, I wonder what does...
