Obviously 'scalped' turf is very subject to weed attack as would a dethatching event... irrigation to protect the concept of deep root growth is also good...

However there are many parts to habitat that is conducive to the growth of any given plant... Soil is the most neglected aspect turf... There's nothing wrong with looking at you soil to see what's happening... At least the first 3",,, but deeper is generally better...
