i kind of admire the ingenuity. very often we are presented with problems and need to find a solution to it, and while that is not the most ideal, nor the most reliable by any means, it probably worked. and i never would have thought of it. too often we get caught up in the high and mighty of "this is how it has to be" and lose sight of get it effing working. try to find a balance.
Might work as a bandaid until you can replace the solenoid, but I would never consider that a permanent repair as the reliability is highly questionable.
