A few bucks in gas costs a lot less than a new axle, trust me I snapped one with topsoil. Never again. 7/8 yards should be fine unless it's raining out or just rained. You also need to consider how close to an actual yard they're giving you. Some places give more generously than others, and I've ended up with closer to 6 on a 5 yard pick up. But generally mulch is relatively light and it's difficult to overload with it.
