Walker w/ 1200 hrs.
I am interested in purchasing a 2001 walker w/ 1220 hrs. on a 25hp. Mower seems to have been maintained very well, The owner said the engine was rerung. What is "rerung"? Will this be a money pit or a good opportunity to get my 1st walker for decent $.

I bought a 2000 Walker with broken pwr meter with a 36" bagging deck and 18HP engine last year for $1500. Check to be sure the hydro units have the cooling fans on them. Take the unit into the street and drive it in a straight line full open to see if either hydro has and hesitation in it. On the deck open the oil ports in the gear boxes and see if they are full, same on hydro.

Rosolar Don't worry about a Walker engines. They are the weakest part of that machine. Because they are so enclosed and low to the ground they run hot and don't last but 1200 to 1500 hrs. I have a 1993 that i just retired because I retired from mowing. It went through more motors than I can remember over the years. Replacement complete long blocks can be purchased from Northern Tool by special order with a two year guarantee. They will bolt right in and clip right to the wiring harness. It takes about 45 minutes to change one out. My experience has found total long block replacement is the best way to go. Rebuilt engines don't last, Maybe because of the high heat build up in Walker's motor compartment. Look for good hydro controls and Gear boxes. It is the wheel drive Gear box that is the most expensive part to replace. If they are good, you can rebuild the mower completely for around $ 3,000 and get another 5 to 6 years out of it. Walker are easy to rebuild because they are Jig Made and most parts can be purchased direct from the original manufacture that sold them to Walker. When I sold out to my employees They bought all my newer Walkers and Left me with a 1997 that I how use it to mow my own grass and spread Fertilizer. As a back up I kept the 1993 and will one day put an other engine in it. BTW I also have a 1999 GHS model that I would like to sell but no one bags grass here in Florida any more. It has around 500 hrs on it and is garage kept. I will put it on E bay this spring. I used in only for Verticutting and occassional back up.

Thanks for the replys. Other options I know the mower has is 9.5 hopper, speed up kit, heavy duty blower chute, flipup deck. fluids changed every 50 hrs. how much would the replacement engine roughly run? would you suggest a different engine(26efi) or would that make the installation way more difficult?

Rosolar First thing when I bought my last new 2004 Walker I got the 20hp because we only used 42" decks only and I wouldn't have to fool with a the computer chip that the 26EFI needs to run. True the 26efi has more power and IMHO more maintenance that I would have to take back to the dealer. I believe to up grade to a 26EFI engine you are looking at big expense and Trouble because they are computer operated. I find the 20 HP has more than enough power for a 42" deck and believe any thing bigger than a 48" deck on a Walker to be a waste. Get a field cutter, Walker are fine turf machines designed for small properties. They worked great on the 3 and 4 K lawns we cut on canals front property. Anything bigger would not worked near as well. Last Engines I purchased from Northern tool was over two years ago and if Memory serves me correct. 20 HP were $ 1200 and 25 HP were $ 1400 at that time. They are complete engines that you only need to add oil and gas to.

I have nearly 3000 hours on my walker, original engine, hydros, everything. I hope to get 1500 more, and I think I will. There were just some bad Kohler 25s for several years (mine is a 20), so find a mechanic that KNOWS THE BAD KOHLER years, if has NOthing to do with Walker. |

Ended up buying my first walker. I can't wait for this machine to help my mowing quality for high end properties and spring/fall cleanups. I have a feeling that I will be one of those who says now that I have it, I don't know how I did without it.
Don't know if these pics are going to work. 2000 48 ghs walker 25 hohler 1200 hrs. $2950.00 |
