Synthetic oil in hydro tranny

I am soon to perform my first hydro fluid change and was wondering if there would be any benefit in using synthetic fluid. I use the synthetic in the motor, and just wondered if it was safe for the hydro tranny's? The manual just calls for 20-50 oil, and my dealer says that is fine, but would it be safe to use synthetic? Thanks!

Of course you will be fine with using synthetic. It will help those hydros run cooler.

I use 15w50 synthetic in my Dixie. I have no idea what the oil viscocity is supposed to be since Dixie was using a custom blended oil when my mower came from the factory. They ditched the custom blended oil and started using Lucas. I personally think the Lucas oil is akin to snake oil so I use something else instead.

I use the 15-50 Mobile one as I don't see it in 20-50. No issues yet and I figured if anything it would help at cold start up. I do warm up the pumps before I move the machine though.

Be careful with Mobil 1 in your hydro transmission. I just heard from the Exmark dealer that Exmark has stopped using Mobil 1 in the hydro transmissions because they had problems with it breaking down. He said they have a new synthetic oil they use. Call your dealer to find out.

Not saying it's not so , but ........maybe exmark found a source that allows them to make money on pushing their own label.

Actually Mobil changed its makeup of the oil and now it doesn't protect as well as it used to therefore Exmark and Toro have come out with the own oil to help protect their units. There has been another thread already up here about this same issue. And the oil retails for about the same as Mobil 1 so they are not trying to get rich, they are just trying to protect their machines and customers like they always have.
