runway lights

Hi Guys
I have a friend in Northern Michigan that wants to install lights along his runway. Its 1000 ft long and around 50 feet from his hanger and power source. How many control boxs will he need to power the lights, he plans on placing them 75 ft apart so there will be eleven on each side. Im worried about voltage drops as its 1000 ft on each side. Any ideas or thoughts would be great.

You know, all this time I have dogged the runway effect, and don't it beat all that we have someone here who needs one. I may be wrong about this, but even on private runway strips, the FAA still has rules about this. beam spreads, lumens, colors, spacing, etc, are all regulated by the FAA. the reason being is that as soon as you light up a runway, it needs to be lit properly for all emergency landings.

We can assisit you with this but I suggest you verify that you dont have to use some sort of special aviation rated or specified fixtures......but as for the VD issue we can definitley help you solve that with a simple sketch with distances, spacing of fixtures, wattage of lamps, and where your primary power supply is. We have the transformers and wiring methods to dial you in! Just verify that you can do this with standard LV products first.........

These should be line voltage and will definatly need to be up to code. Talk about a liability issue. Definatly best left to the pros.

There are aviation lighitng specialists who do this type of work. Just google them. I would not touch this without an engineered specification provided by authorized agencies. I am currently working on lighting a helicopter landing pad. My role, connecting the professionals who do this work with the EC's who will be installing it... basically a consultant / broker. There are lots of regulations, specifications and rules that must be met.

Hi Guys
This is a private 1000 ft runway that is not open to the public, that said the lighting is really more for looks than anything else as 99 percent of the time he just likes to look at his runway lit up. He is a bit of a light nut.

I will add one more thing, this runway is way too short for a regular General aviation plane like a Cessna or piper, only thing you can land here is a ultra light or a small home built plane. This is the reason for not going with FAA approved lighting.

I would think there is still a liability in creating that look. Further I think the spacing your suggesting is much too far apart.

75' is fine spacing for a small runway like that. Don't mess with low voltage on this one. You need line voltage with good aviation grade marker lights. All runways will have white lights and taxiways will be blue. At most airports I have flown into and around the lights are typically in dim mode until you key your mike 3-7 times on the airports radio frequency which will bring them up to low, med or full illumination and illuminate the REILs (runway end indicator lights) and the glide slope indicator lights for approaching aircraft. I didn't see anything in my FAR/AIM about lighting at private strips but I would probably just make a phone call to an FAA official just to CYA.

Hi Tim
The problem with aviation lights is the price, and the pilot controlled light is just not going to happen because of cost. We looked at Oshkosh this year while we were there and the cost of aviation grade lights is just too high. Lets look at it this way, instead of a 1000 ft runway lets just call this a 1000 ft driveway, what would you use?
