Need help on engine

Hey. I'm just trying to figure out what's wrong with my engine. If you look in the pics you'll probably see what the issue is, but I don't know what it's called and what I should do to fix it. Could you help me out?

Put push rod back in place and set valves.

It popped back into place, then popped back out. It looks as though the screw is not screwed in enough. There is a couple thread difference between the two screws that attach to the push rods. I'm going to screw it in a bit.

How do I set the valves?

Is it common for one valve/valve spring to be lower than the other? I just took a peek again and the valve that, in this case, is disconnected is also not coming up as high as the other. At both of their highest points, the one that has the disconnected push rod sits lower than the one that is fine.

Is something holding that valve open where it don't close?

@laman

I'm not sure yet if something is holding it open. It's the exhaust valve.

Where do you think I should start to find out if something is holding it open?

The freakin valve is bent or galled to the guide so ya gotta pull the head etc.

Ok.

That rod is called a push rod, at the very bottom of it through that little hole
where you can't see is the camshaft where the other end of that there push rod
rides on certain egg-shaped lobes that make it go up-and-down as the engine turns.

This push rod pushes UP on a lifter, the thing that it keeps popping out from under is called a lifter.
On the other end of that lifter is your valve.

The first thing I would do pretty much regardless is after you figure out how to adjust it,
is replace that push rod because if it even got the slightest bit of damage and you put it all back together
it could end up tearing things up, probably not but they're not that expensive and better safe than sorry.

Beyond that I have to leave it to the experts.

Loosen up both rockers and check leakdown.
