Many possibilities including:
clogged filters-air,fuel both?
bad intake manifold gasket.
bad ignition coils
if it smokes - bad rings.
I'm not a mechanic but I've had my share of Kohler problems. Good Luck

Had the same problem w/my gs-30 deere.
13hp kholer. It drove me crazy! Cheked all that Mow ED mentioned. Finally replaced starter key switch. ALSO,check this out.
The tansmision has a saftey plate sensor init. This wears out,(its just crappy thin metal)so it over rides the dead man switch .
lately as the trans.indcator has worn(where the trans speed #s are visiable)we've moved the shift lever between N and1ST gear to start it. my J.D. mechanics spent 12 hrs on
it to finally figure all this out.
GOOD LUCK!
