1996 GMC 3500 hd tans. problem !

So i'm looking at a 96 gmc 3500 hd dump truck and its a 454 motor with a 4l80le transs When you go to drive the truck 1st and 2nd gear has a really loud winding noise. similar to a power steering sound. Is this a common thing with these trucks ? dont want to buy a money pit ! Anyone out there have any advice on this ??????? Thanks guys !
