Bed Edging - (____LF/Day)?

I'm putting together a budget for a large residential "estate" type property for 2012. I'm considering purchasing a commercial bed edger.

How many LF could one person "comfortably" edge in a day?

Is this something you'd WANT to do (all day)? How much weat/tear (on operator)?

Could you get by using the edger once in spring and once in fall......and have it look "outstanding" all year long?

That one looks great. No idea on the cost.

Pretty sure the ones I've seen - people run them backwards. If money were NO object, I'd get the one in the vid, and go on. I only have 12 or so residential accounts. And, the commercials I service have no need for bed edging. Hard to justify a purchase of one of these, regardless. I'm trying to figure out how many LF (for labor) one could install in a normal day....without completely killing himself.

If you are talking about maintaining existing bed edges, we have had good luck using the Echo handheld bed redefiner. I'm just guessing, but I can do 500 feet in about an hour (never timed it). We do baseball infield edging also. It is great for a touchup prior to a mulch install. The Echo costs about $600, which is overpriced for what it is, but cheap for what it does. For a twice per year tune-up, it is ideal. The video is pretty realistic.

The Echo is not great for cutting new beds out of a lawn, it will do it, but slowly. And it doesn't cut as deep as some guys feel they need. Some guys want to see 2 inches of the turf/dirt profile next to the mulch...which I think looks strange. But many guys do it that way.

These bed edges have been neglected for a long time.

I use a bed edger during spring and fall clean ups. Stick edger to touch up during the mowing season. This keeps the edges looking great. I rent the edger but would like to buy my own at some point.

You can easily do 4000 + LF of edging a day with a bed edger.

The Little Wonder claims 100ft a minute! I have used the Brown and it's not far behind. I'm not sure if you can justify buying one though. After you get the edge re-established a stick edger or trimmer will keep it sharp.

In six years I still haven't really needed to actually buy one. I've think I might have spent close to 200 in rentals in that time.

Just don't have the bigger accounts or installs to purchase one. Even my biggest client has over 8000 feet of edges and they are already defined, so my tiller head will re-define them in 2.5 hours.

If, and It's a big if, I got a major install that required one then I'd probably buy one then.
