15 Kohler evil starting beast!

When I have been trying to start my exmark with a 15 Kohler I find that it will pull once or twice, then I will pull with all my mite, and the cord does not come with my hand. You know, the powerful pull that rips your shoulder off. I can then overcome the pull with a long hard slow pull, then pull a couple more times with no start, only to find that the engine is siezed again. Any thoughts on what is going on here? I figure I am having a choke problem, but would this cause the engine to sieze? This is like when Oil gets in the carb of my 21 and the engine siezes up. Any suggestions, ideas are much appreciated.

either your valves are set wrong or your cylinder is filling with oil causing " hydraulic lock" , oil will fill the cylinder if engine is run or set at an angle in the direction of the plug for any length of time, another possibility is a slightly sheared flywheel key

a pull that rips your shoulder off sounds like a flywheel key

I don't believe it's the key because when you pull it slow there is still a lot of resistance. have you ever had it running? can you eventually get it running? have you checked the blade brake? is there too much oil in the crankcase?

Yes, I can get it started eventually. Because of this, I wondered if it could be a sheared key, wouldn't it always be a shoulder ripper if it were a key gone bad? Mine happens every few pulls, or sometimes every few times a start the machine. It has been worse since it has gotten cooler. Would 5w30 be bad for weather in the 30's and 40's? Would that help?

you said you can over come it with a long hard slow pull. if it still pulls hard with a slow and steady pull then the flywheel key is no factor because your not pulling it fast enough to generate a spark. have you checked the other items in my last post?

Oil in the crankcase is fine. I have not checked the blade brake. How does one do this, and could this be something that happens intermitantly?

yes and i don't know. that's why i'm asking a lot of questions.

i'm not real familiar with your unit. is it a hydro? the next time it locks up take the plug out of it and see if it pulls easy and watch for any oil sputtering out of the plug hole. if it pulls over easy with the plug out immediatly after the plug is removed then you getting oil in the cylinder like del9175 suggested. this is most likely from very worn or broken piston rings.

i didn't ask if this locking effect happens after it has set for some time? after you do get it started will it start the rest of the day ok? when running does it run ok without ant blue smoke? if it locks up after a few hours or over night it could be you needle and or float bad in the carb and could be filling up the cylinder with fuel. that's one of two reasons i asked if the oil level was correct.

we all should figure this thing out for you. i know i asked you to do a lot of things and maybe we can eliminate most of them and find the problem.

How well does she run once you get her going? And does it do this after its warmed up?

Hope you get her fixed....

You guys are studs, thanks so much!

I don't know if I can pin point a pattern for when she does act up. I would say that more then likely, it is after she sits for some time, but not exclusively. I would say that once she is warm, she is much easier to restart, with little threat of her pulling hard, but there are exceptions such as yesterday.

Example, I started her yesterday after it sat for a week or two (acting as a backup mower), it did take many pulls to start her, some of which were the deltoid destroying kind. Ran it for 15 minutes, parked her for 15, and then tried to start her only to again damage my rotator cuff. Today I started it, and she kicked over great.

I have pulled the plug at this time, to clear the chamber, and it pulls pretty easy, normal I would say. I wanted to see if the plug was fouling, but did not show much evidence that it was.

Today pulled her quite a few times, and she started nice, and none of the pulls were of the brutal sort. I am wondering about the carb too?
