Which mower to cut around flower beds?
Hi,
Have a ZTR for the main areas, but need something to cut around flower beds, underneath trees (requiring forward and back motion as branches are too low to walk/ride there), and in other tight spots that are too big for a trimmer but too small for the ZTR. I've been using an old self-propelled push mower, but it has several drawbacks: - only one speed - too heavy to push without self-propelled mechanism on (which is a pain when pushing/pulling to cut underneath trees or in the front ditch) - not enough traction with its small wheels (I have fairly uneven ground) - cutting along flower beds messes up my edging So ideally I'd find a machine that is self-propelled with adjustable speed, and when disengaged, can be pulled backwards without resistance from transmission/engine, has a good engine that starts easy, is fairly light (for the ditch), has bigger wheels (for uneven ground), and has a deck that overhangs the wheels on at least one side to cut around flower beds without messing up my edging. Low price and long warranty would be nice but that's wishful thinking I'm sure. Mulching/bagging/side discharge, don't really care as long as the clippings don't get into my flower beds (enough weeds already). Seems that overhanging deck is not easy to find unless you go to a ZTR. Any suggestions? Thx, Frank |

Those are nice, but I want to keep the cost to around $1000 or less if possible, though for the right machine I may go a little higher.
Cub Cadet has this mower for about $1300: Cub Cadet® 33 in. 420cc Heavy-Duty Wide Area Mower with Front Caster Wheels and Electric Start Wonder who makes their engine? Cub Cadet's reputation used to be pretty good, is that still the case? Main drawback with this model appears to be the cutting deck not extending beyond the wheels. |

Anyway you can prune the trees. I did allot mine to speed things up.
