That's why most counties have a fert ban in place during the wet season. We are in a monsoon right now.

This also highlights why the fert ban is misguided and is making the problem worse.

St. Aug is most active and most able to take up nutrients in the summer. U FL research has shown that proper application technique and proper fert rates in the summer DECREASE nutrient runoff into the waterways and aquifers by creating healthier grass plants and creating healthier roots to act as a filter to nutrient and water runoff.

However, the current fert bans decrease the grass's filtration ability and encourage fert application when the turf can not take up the nutrients as effectively.

The result: increased nutrient runoff and algal blooms!

That's sad. It's one of my favorite places to go kayaking.

As well as thinking about how much of their policies are feel good, politically correct mandates VS actual science. I believe that fertilizing lawns where the irrigation system applies an inch or more of water per week is similar to fertilizing during the rain season. I would be happy if I no longer saw bags of fertilizer at the stores and certification of fertilizer users became law.

Dream on. No way the Chemical industry Lobby is going to let that happen. At least not in our life time.

I hear you. Now with the idiotic regulations imposed on LCO's in Florida, does that mean that there is still fertilizers for sale to the public of all kinds? Even the high nitrogen and phosphorus stuff the pros are not supposed to use. Does this also mean that there is nothing for sale during the fertilizer black outs. If not, I must call BS on the whole regulation thing.

Fertilizer Regulation in Florida is pure BS at present time. The State Ag inspector told me he didn't care what fertilizer I was applying, HE DIDN"T REGULATE FERTILIZER. The Fert regulations are county imposed and vary greatly from one county to the next.

Yes you can buy any reasonable standard blend of Fertilizer at any of the Big Box stores or local hardware. While I might agree residential fert is adding to Nitrates in our water etc, It is Agriculture that is the big polluter. Florida has had regular Red Tides out breaks long before commercial fertilizer was ever invented.
