Which Fall Fertilizer Should I Use?
Hello,
I wanted to put down some fall fertilizer on my lawn. Should I put down one that is high in nitrogen such as Scotts Wintercare which is 30-0-9 or the pro version that is 32-0-10 or should I stick with something that's lower in nitrogen like a 12-3-18 version? Thanks. |

the amount that you are concerned with is: .5 lbs/k,,, .75 lbs/k or 1.0lbs/k of actual N and K... no P necessary...
% of slow release is good to know as well... personally,, I don't believe in slow release for the Fall in that, if slow release lasts through the winter, then it is feeding too early in the Spring...

Agree with Axe...however...at Michigan State University (Alma Mater), they found that heavy fall fertilization with quick-release nitrogen resulted in nitrate contamination of water at the 6 feet deep level, resulting from heavy rains and snow melt in the next few months.
So...I suggest a product high in slow release nitrogen. The Scotts would work, although their formula is seldom over 30 percent slow-release. You have to read the bag label carefully. It will say something like 30 percent nitrogen, of which 12 percent is slow release. |

It will work OK if the Slow Release pellets are all dissolved before Winter... Like Riggle says,,, there is no reason to have that stuff dissolving in the snow and washing over frozen ground into the waterways at Spring Thaw...
Besides,,, you don't want the N there first thing when the ground thaws... the plants are designed to set out new root growth during that time of the Season and forcing "Green" at that point, interferes with the Plants natural cycle... that would be similar to suddenly moving your day to the,,, Graveyard Shift...
