Incorrect dipstick reading on Scag?

I have strange problem on my Scag V-Ride Kawi FX engine. The oil has been darkening rather quickly, after only 25 hours it is almost black. Also it appeared to be rather low, almost empty on the dipstick. But when I drained the oil to change it I got almost 2 quarts out, which is what it takes to fill it. Is it possible for the dipstick to somehow give an incorrect reading? Also any thoughts about the oil darkening so quickly. It runs fine other than that.

To check the oil on Kaw engines you don't thread in the dipstick..you just set it on the top of the tube..if you thread it in to check the oil...you will be low on oil...
If your oil is turning black ...it is usually from dirt getting through or around the air filter..

Would that oil check procedure be the same for a Kohler CV740?

No...checking the oil level on Kohler command engines ...you have to tighten the dipstick to check the level...if you overfill it...it will smoke..
Kawasiki oil level will be low if you thread in the dipstick to check the oil level.

Dutch...it is still a little early in the morning...I only get up this early so that RestroRob doesn't beat me to all the gravy....

Need some of the OLD GUYS (RestroRob...Dutch...Pugs..BigFish..and the likes) to shed a little light on the proper oil level checking procedure for Kohler Command verticle engines...
I know that they had a few different dipsticks on the Courage engines...
Aint gonna lie to you..I have been checking the oil level just the way I described above for way more than a few years...with no issues...
Any insight...???

Hmmmmm...
Left this fish in the water overnight...still no takers....
If its still here tomorrow...maybe I'll wrap it in foil ..and throw it in the smoker...

Hey! Don't include me in with them old farts!! ( Just 'cause I can remember where I was and what I was doin' on Nov. 22, 1963 )

I don't screw in the dipstick on Kohler, or Kawasucki, never have, never will. Everything Ive ever been taught, or read, said so.

Briggs ya screw in when checking.

Lawns, is the Scag original to you? If not, the previous owner may have replaced the dipstick with one from another Kaw model----or I've also seen dipsticks that have broken off at the cap, the broken piece pulled out of the cap and the shortened dipstick reinserted in the cap. Just a SWAG(scientific wild a$$ed guess).

Slapper, maybe it's just to early in the morning for an old fart like me, but if the engine has the proper amount of oil, won't the dipstick show overfilled if it's turned onto the fill tube?

Oil usage(worn rings/pistons) and overfuelling will also contribute to premature oil darkening as well.

If you thread the dipstick in , wouldnt you get a higher reading since the dipstick is going in further.

Has the oil check procedure for Kohler Command engines changed? I know that the proper procedure used to be to check it with the dipstick unthreaded by putting the dipstick in and turning it counterclockwise until it drops down to it's lowest point in the threads (same as Kawi).
