How to keep spindle from turning during blade removal.

I tried searching for this but had no luck. And I've changed blades many times before by simply using a short 2x4 to keep the blade from moving. But now the center blade on my Lazer Z is giving me a problem in that even with the blade restrained with a block of wood, the spindle and the topside pulley turns so that I can't remove the blade bolt. If there's a trick to locking the spindle so I can remove that bolt, I'd appreciate hearing about it. I thought of removing the belt and using a big pipe wrench on the pulley, but I'm afraid I'd damage the pulley.

You might try blocking up the blade belt idler pulley, turn the key on, bypass the safeties and engage the pto/clutch.
I've always used an impact, you might try a loaner from an auto parts store.

The easiest way would be to use a side grinder and cut the head off the bolt. Then you can take it out with your fingers. (after it cools)

The blade bolts need 120 #ft of torque. Use 80 #ft and it may take 280 to get them off. Use 120 and it will take 120 to get them off. Too loose and they will work tighten.

Considering the age of your mower you should replace the other 2 bolts.

This is what you need to do. Trust me. Just cut the head off. Let it cool, turn the threads out to remove it. Install new stainless steel bolt to attach the blade.

Anti-seize will solve most all blade bolt removal problems--it's inexpensive and your frustration level will be reduced.

Grab an impact gun, it will make life easier and certanly safer.

Impact is the only easy to do it, take it to a tire shop and give one of the fellers 10$ to get it off for you.
