Box Truck Strength

Anyone know how strong the box trucks are? I was thinking of coverting one to a chipper truck, since they are so cheap to pickup just add a dump hoist and change rear door

youll be better of taking the box off and having a dump bed built to fit the walls wouldn't stand up to the force of chips pushing out and also from the force of the chips being thrown at them

I have seen some makeshift tree equip around here since sandy but a really cool one was a flatbed dump with a shipping container strapped down and a torch cut hole in the door for the chipper. find a way to close the hole up after and you keep your flat bed dump, and separate container. combine for awesome occasional chip truck.

I saw alot of debris trucks like that after hurricane isaac. Grapple trucks pulling flatbed trailers with shipping container on it with the top cut out.

Yup theres about 5 of those parked at a hotel down the road from my house doing Sandy cleanup. I saw a few of them that used containers for the truck beds as well.

theres a vast difference in the strengths of the box depending on its construction .Some boxes are just crap ,others are really solid heavy duty units .It also might be fairly easy to toughen up a crappy box .

Only thing strong on a box truck is the floor............Bad Idea

I would advise against it. Since all the accidents i have been at they break very easy because all they are is plywood and sheet metal.And when they wreck the cleanup is a mess cause cargo goes everywhere which means $$. Think about putting a piece of plywood in front of a chipper discharge or trying to support thousands of pounds with a piece of plywood. Now if you strengthen it then it should work but like others have mentioned the shipping container should work well with minor work. Or another option is making one out of 2by lumber buy that cost may be close to a used container.

have you guys never seen a frp box ? 3/4" plywood sandwiched between two thick layers of fibreglass matt makes for a very tough box .Yes there are all kinds of junky boxes out there ,but there is also many awesome ones as well .I guess it is possible you cant get them in the states .

Just add some extra ribs and maybe another layer of 3/4 inch fir plywood.
