What issues have come up through your web site?

Iím looking for the good the bad and the ugly.

I had a contact form on my page and it served for spammers to spam the hell out of me.

Has anyone out there had any issues with customers getting mad at their pics or something with employees in pic etc...?

What, like customers not wanting pics of their property used on your site? Never been an issue, but I have a photo release as one part of my contract, stating that I retain the right to use all drawings and photos in my portfolio and other marketing efforts but will not disclose address or other personal info without written permission.

Spam has been minimal, not sure why. My biggest problem is older folks who don't get how Google works. At least 2-3x a spring I get a call from someone who typed something like "cheap vinyl fencing" and because I must have mentioned that phrase in a blog post, I'm on page one. When I tell them I don't do that they start screaming at me for false advertising on the Google and I better sell them a g-d fence panel if I know what's good for me. Seriously. People are weird.

I have bots spam me e-mails. I have random companies send me spam e-mail. I have local people calling me wanting me to do things that have nothing to do with lawn care. One of my most strange was a guy wanting me to haul his hay from one town to another. What does hauling hay have to do with mowing lawns? The good things strongly outweigh the negatives though. I have received lots of new clients!

The web master was bad, auto bots and them not making changes that I wanted. I don't even tell anyone I have a site.

do you have a contact form or a contact us page with all your info on it?
if its a form it needs to be filled out before its sent to you... can a bot do that?
if so how about adding a simple question at the bottom of the form like, whats 2+5 and make them answer it?

bots have no problem handling those issues. they're better at simple math than most humans.

i find that the combination of three things has helped me see almost zero spam:
1. a good, actively updated form (especially if a wordpress plugin, such as contact7 or gravity forms)
2. a honeypot field (a hidden from your visitors by CSS, blank form field that bots will fill out, invalidating the submission)
3. form submission to a gmail address. gmail is just very good at catching spam.

We usually just ask the customer if we can place a photo of their home on our website and also tell them that their home address will not be shown and they always take it as a compliment and say yes.
I'm sure we all get the calls trying to place our sites on the top of Google or trying to sell us a website that is already populated with information and photos or the junk email.
One unusual call was to come out and dig a hole to bury their dog in the back yard which we did.

Could you add a captcha phrase to your contact page to cut down on bot spams?
