i'm in atlanta, we have a while to go until the last frost.. probally in april. a customer wants some fruit trees planted now, i saw some for sale at TSC the other day.. is it ok to plant these trees in the winter? I told the customer i could do it after final frost. I have never planted anything in the winter before.. we have mild winters here though.

Now is definitely not the best time. You either want to plant before winter or just After. This gives the tree the best chance to root and be able to adapt and thrive. Try and get her to hold off.

I've alway's planted at the coldest time of the year, that's usually Feb 1 around here. The tree is at it's most dormant then and transplant shock is kept to a minimum. This has been working for me for 26 year's. The key to making a newly planted tree survive is water, keeping the rootzone wet for a year for sure, up to 3 year's where it get's hotter, like GA.

Ideal time is past but dormant season is best.
Keep in mind tree companies plant year round.

Plant them now, dig extra big holes, especially if it is in our crappy red clay and add tons of organic material.

The root system will continue to grow even when the rest of the plant is dormant. I don't see the harm in doing it now. Make sure to mix in organic material as some else mentioned, and mulch to protect the roots from the cold.

Yes, it is OK, especially in your region.

Here in northeast, if the ground is not frozen I have planted in February.

I have baby flower buds forming on my peach trees here in Virginia. Their about 3/8 of an inch wide. Its safe to plant dormant trees here anyway.
