2002 Chevy Silverado 2500

I recently purchased a used work truck and knew there was a winding noise in the rear so I talked the guy down on price a good amount. I just got a call from the mechanic and they said it needs a new rear. A new rear costs $2,600 with a 100K mile warrenty.

I have asked the guys at the shop to call and find a used rear and see if it would save me a good deal...

What would you guys do? I have the money to do a new rear but hate to do that on a truck that has 144K miles.

I would say go new, a used one will probable coust you 1500, So I would rather have the warranty

You think so even tho the truck already has pretty high mileage. They can get a used on with 95k miles for 1400

Not sure what in your truck but I just rolled over 211k on my 2500HD, If I was at 144k I wouldnt have thought this far ahead, But I probably would have needed replacing by right about now in my trucks life. Im still on the original axles, motor, and tranny fingers crossed

Gms are known for rear end noise. Gm evens makes an additive to help stop the noise. I have 3 2500 work vans. One I was also told to change the rear end. After a couple thousand miles it sounded the same. You should be fine.

Hmmm only 144k miles? Heck mine has 213k miles and still going good. No noise and still all original trans, rear end, and motor.

I'd tear into it and replace what's needed, But that's just because I've got the tools and know how......

I think I'd get them to replace the rear end. What did they say was wrong with it? Chipped pinion or ring gear? Wrong backlash?

Get the rear-end rebuilt by someone who know's what he's doing. Most likely there's to much back-lash causing the whining or a pitted bearing roller and race
