FH680C kawasaki engine replacement

Hello,
Does anyone have any information regarding a briggs/ kohler engine replacement for a fh680v Kawasaki 23hp engine on my 2000 exmark lazer hp?? It would appear that Kawasaki has discontinued parts ( Block) as the engines have failed to pass government emissions regulations. A replacement complete engine can be obtained for more than I wish to spend. Does anyone know if a swap can be successful without to many issues?
Thanks

Most all engines have the same footprint (mounting holes), Things to look for on a replacement is;

Crank diameter and length.
Throttle control (integrated choke or separate).
Charging system output rating.
New engine muffler clearance in frame.

If you match the above items the only issue is a few changes on the wire harness to hook it up......
