Buying a new mower! Opinions

I am looking a buying a new mower this fall or next spring. I am kinda stuck on what brand to get. I am having a toss up of the Kubota, Grass Hopper, or John Deere. I have never bought a new mower always bought used from private party, never had a problem with them just getting tired. So I figured it was finally time to buy new, don't know if i should be happy or sad. LOL! I would like to stick with one of the local companies to buy from. So, I guess what I am asking is for every ones opinion on what to get. Also please use the poll option.

Thanks Justin

What type of mower? ZTR? What size? What are you expectations and what conditions will it see daily? Answer these questions and we can help point you in the right direction. They are all good brands, just what are you using this mower for and at which model level will effect who may be better.

None of the above. Find a Scag dealer and thank me later
If you really have to compromise, get a Deere w/ 7 Iron deck.

I gotta go with these guys. If you have a Scag dealer not too far away I would at least demo one before you make a decision.

I would not buy any of the three listed. We use Walkers and Ferris

I will be looking at a 54 or 60 ZTR, and I am looking at getting one that I can put a dump from seat bagger on. The only reason I didn't list Scag was because I use to see people run them all the time around here, but now I have hardly seen any Scags around anymore seems like the guys I see run Toro or Grass Hopper. My reasoning for not going with Toro is because there isn't a dealer real close like the other 3. There is a Scag dealer close so I will have to go look into them. I guess its really all going to be personal preference just wanted some other peoples opinions.

I Have used scag, toro, exmark, wright, walker, Great dane, John deere, Dixie chopper and ferris in the past.

My favorite all time walkbehind is the toro 44" T bar SFS.

Best ZTR of all time Exmark Lazer Z

Best Standing/rider forward it's a Tie between Ferris Evolution and Great Dane Super Surfer.

Best bagging unit Walker GHS (although Lazer Z close second)

I currently use Ferris/Snapper Products and walker.

If I were to branch into a new product I havent tried before it would definitely be the Grasshopper.

I havent bought Scag recently because the local dealer sucks and the product is over priced. (add 20% to anything you buy in alaska, when compared to the lower 48... why? because they want to!)

Scag is extremely reliable and durable. I like the V-ride. I had a 36 hydro walk behind forever until about 18 months ago when I gave it to my brother in law.

You better listen now before its too late!!!!!

I don't care what brand you buy. The speed of service for warranty work and the quality of work at the dealer better matter to you more than the brand you buy. I have two local mower shops in my city. One of them hangs a sign up that says, "shop is 3 to 6 weeks behind". I found a dealer that is 45 minutes from me but they will roll my right in the shop for warranty work. They also offer same day service for commercial users. I have been in business for years and have never got this quality of service. Ask around ask around. You will find allot of Scag users on this site. I bought two brand new mowers with a two year warranty for the price of one Scag Turf Tiger. I will trade them in when the warranty runs out. It depends on how long you plan to keep it. Dear God, don't buy a Kubota. There is no real aftermarket for parts and I've never got away from the dealer for less than a thousand. That's why I no longer have them. Good luck. Educate yourself and network all winter long and make an educated decision. I will say buying new mowers changed my life. I sleep better.

I agree with you hotdog, and that is one of the reasons I am having a hard time deciding. My uncle works as a mechanic at the John Deere dealer and I know I could also get the Grass hoppers in right away also. I also have a guy that I am good friends with that deals with simplicity, which brings me to my next dilemma. Does anyone any experience with the new Simplicity ZTR?
