2001 Silverado Exhaust Rattle

I recently bought a 2001 Silverado 6.0 liter 2500 with 130k miles. I noticed that i hear a rattle when it reaches 1500 rpms. It never rattles at any other rpms. I already removed the manifold covers because they were rusted but i still hear it. I checked the exhaust from front to back and can not find anything that will rattle but yet it continues to rattle at 1500 rpm. Any body have an idea to what this could be?

I've generally found these annoying rattles to either be an adjustable flange/bracket or w/in one of the heat-shield cages around the cat/etc... Sometimes rocks will get thrown up in there, too.

Looseness laterally. Some use a viscous fluid that may have leaked out. Have you stuck your head under the hood with the engine at 1500? Check your u joints and fan shroud too.

Well the thing is, I never hear the noise unless its in drive or reverse. I Just bought this truck and the guy told me it was an exhaust rattle but he might have been wrong..

If you can't shake it by hand to reproduce its probably not in the exhaust.

Exhaust shield. There's a bunch. Use a rubber mallet to find it

I checked the Fan Clutch and U-Joints.. They were good. Then I decided to shake the exhaust again. I hit one of the cats and it made the same rattling sound I was hearing. Now what to do about it is the next question.. Is it a big deal to cut off both cats and put in a replacement pipe?

U joints can't be visually inspected. You probably need cats to pass emissions
