Fertilizer & Well water......

I just about have a customer talked into a fertilizer program. Then she asked if it will effect her well water...

I told her I didn't think so but I'd check into it... hence the post here

Are there any effects? Will the chemicals drain that far down?

Depends on how high the water table is and how water soluable your fertilizer is. Depending on the ground water flow in the area of the well, you could apply the fertilizer several hundred feet away from the well and it could get into the well water through ground water transport. Anything that is applied to the surface of the land has potential to infiltrate and then percolate into an aquifer system. It's a tough question to answer.

Unless it is a very shallow well, generally called a crock well, the answer is no.

Most wells are tapped into an aquifer, esentially an underground river, and pesticide applied by neighbors or farmers is generally of much greater concern.

The best place to check is with your county offices. All wells must be registerd when they are drilled, they also test periodically to make certain that the community aquifer is free of contaminates.

Good Luck,
