Locator
first of all thanks to everyone who posts on here. I have learned so much from reading this site. I am looking for a locator. Tired of showing up and hunting the valve boxes. Was wondering what it the best locator and how much do they run. Thanks in advance guys.

We have two 501 models from tempo, actually they used to be progressive, we've had them forever and are very nice. We also have a box one that takes two 6v batteries or 12v, not sure but I hate using it, For locating valves, wire runs, cable, electrical, phone and gas the 501 has been pretty awesome. |

I too have used the 501 for years and it has served me well.
I've been thinking about buying a Cable Hound because the price is quite a bit lower but I'm afraid I may not like it. http://www.metrotelcorp.com/cableh.html |

We're heading up to the Clovis Ewing next week for one of their one day training seminars. It's on valve electrical problems and wire locating equipment. I've taken it before but I want my partner to learn from someone else because he's probably tired of listening to me all the time. Besides, even I always learn something new at these things. We purchased our 521 locator, ground fault indicator and toner system after I attended a similar seminar locally about 15 years ago and got to see the advantages first hand and use the equipment during the seminar. Perhaps you might have something locally offered by either suppliers or manufacturers where you can learn more about different equipment and then make a choice?

I bought a 521 off Ebay a couple months ago for $325....we was the only bidder. It don't look pretty but we have used it for several jobs and works fine.

The 521 is sort of the default locator in the irrigation trade. There are other makes, but the experience with them is largely outside of the trade, so there isn't as much to learn about them here.
