Speaking of backflows the site I reported on not having a backflow device (although the system is only three years old) has encountered problems. One of the isolation gate valves has split and a steady stream of water is coming out making a big muddy mess. Of course there's no way to shut it down and make repairs without shutting down the domestic supply which will also kill the cafeteria. They're trying to figure out now when we'll be able to do the repairs and hoping that the situation doesn't get worse forcing an untimely shut-down. At least now I understand that people above our department (including the section director and the Risk Manager) are aware of the situation. The big question being asked by them: "How did this happen?"

You guys don't work at night? Good time to do it. Get some lights and you're set to go. Or the weekend gives you plenty of time.

Still no guesses as to what's missing? Okay, here's another PVB install (not one of mine) that is unusual. Can you see why?

Missing the manufacturers ball valves on either side?

In both pics there is a hose bibb used as a drain prior to the PVB. This creates a hazard when hooking up with a hose. Also the second pic has PVC before the PVB. But I can't tell if it is copper as it exits the house then converts to PVC. PVC inside the home would be a no-no here. But I have seen it quite a few times on homeowner installed systems.

Not the ball valves, or PVB orientation, for the first one, and hose bib drains and blowouts are something of a matter of indifference around here, with all the existing ones in place. Something more subtle, for this assembly.

Second one might have PVC in the house, but that wouldn't be the issue there. And now that I look at it again, there might be another explanation for what's visible in the photo.
