number of 2-cycle engine failures?

This is for the repair shops mostly. At our shop we have seen a spike in the number of 2-cycle engine failures in the last few months. All makes, all brands, all types and all ages. From top of the line just out of the box to bottom of the line old timers. No rhyme or reason. The only thing they have in common is they are 2-cycle machines. At our shop we think it must be the cheap crap they are selling for gasoline now days. Maybe it has too much alcohol in it or something. Just wondering if any other shop has seen a rise in the number of 2-cycle engine failures here lately.

Maybe, I'm not sure. But I remember in the auto service biz we would have runs on certain repairs. Some weeks it was alternators. Wait a few weeks then it was valve jobs. We could string maybe 3 of them in a row. I remember for a month we had mostly automatic trans in for rebuilds. It got to when the phone rang we just knew it was a tranny. But you could be on to something with the Ethanol (can't spell it)

No more then usual in my shop, just did an Echo blower today that the customer had put Diesel fuel in the tank, at least it wasn't straight gas.

We've had a run on chain saw carb. rebuilds going on, Seems everybody puts their saw away for the summer with fuel left in it without some kind of stabilizer. When they get them out to cut fire wood for winter they won't start.

Maybe it is just something in this area. We are seeing a lot of 2-cycle engines that have what looks like no oil or not enough oil in the mix. Now one unit did have straight gas so I can not count that one. Maybe it is just one of these things that hit in bunches. About a dozen or so in the last 2 weeks and of which 8 were straight in a row. Two of those were major name brand machines just of of the box.

What are the modes of failure? Crankshaft bearings failing, cylinder wall scored, or what?

That is just it. It is ALL models. Scored cylinder wall and piston. Some with little transfer and some with very heavy metal transfer. No bearing failures so far in this mess. I seen 2-cycle failures all the time just like any shop it is just odd to get over loaded with so many at one time with similar damage. I guess it is just one of these things. After this I may not see another one for 6 months who knows. Just thought that with gas the way it is now days there maybe a link. Guess not.
