Never had a problem, I use a battery maintainer to keep a good strong battery. The battery on my old JD lx277 lawn tractor is origional from the spring of 2000 and still going strong.

I just choke and start, no problem. It's a 17 hp Kaw.

My new Scag with 27hp Lc Kaw does not start quite as easy and needs a little longer run with a touch of choke to get going, but then at only 24 hours it's hardly broken in.

We have a 36" thats hard to start what we do is back the rider to the motor of the 36" and let the exsoust warm it up, starts great after that

Are all the starting issues (you and you friend) only in the cold?
Did they start fine this summer?

I just choke and start on my 19hp.dont take much choke to start it.

I have a 454 Kawasaki motorcycle that does the EXACT same thing. Starts right up every time when it's warm out, but let the temp get down to like 55, or if it sits in the garage for a few days it's a bi&*h to start. This time of year IF we get a decent enough day for a cruise, I have to pull it out and jump it off the car to get it started, full choke....once it's going it purrs like a kitten though....(hopefully upgrading to a lion in the spring!)

I have the same problem with mine. I run the sae 30 wt oil in it so I am guessing its just the oil. But I am running the same oil in a 16hp twin cyl vanguard on a hydro wb and it starts on the 2nd or 3rd pull.

well it's sounding like an oil viscosity issue - my buddy is using 25W-50 in his DR Bush Muncher - J&R is running straight 30W - i do have 10W-30 in mine but it seems to me until that oil starts "flowing" the safety feature won't allow the engine to fire - thats why the vanguard fires up but the kawi tales some time - the vanguard most likely doesn't have that oil pressure safety switch i wouyld try some 5W-40 but that kind of scares me - how can an oil have that range of viscosity - something must be compromised?!?! and no his problems started as the cooler weather came in

I just went to try and start mine to move it, battery was dead. So I will see once the battery gets a charge if it will start.

straight 30 is no good for the cold! SAE30 is for a consistent temperature. If you mow when it's cold then this is not the oil for you. I followed the plate on the side of my 14hp kawi (SAE30) and ended up blowing out a crankcase cover gasket. This is the one that goes completely around the block so it's not easy to fix. I told the shop that I was putting in SAE30 and he looked at me like I was crazy. He said always, always 10w30. The SAE30 is like molassas. If you are running it...when it's cold and before starting pull the oil stick and watch it drip off the end. Now do that with 10w30. A 10w30 will still perform like a 30 weight oil at 100C. Also, I run Mobil1. Your engine takes <2L so for a couple of dollars more why not put the good stuff in.

Petekief - did you notice an improvement with the hydros disengaged?

no - she is sitting idle and has been since i put her up tuesday night - - - i plan on taking off the mulch kit and lubing her up - getting fuel and adding sabilizer - maybe chop up some of my OWN leaves this Saturday so i'll see how she acts then - if i have any trouble at all i'll try that - thanks
