Mulching and Hedge trimming?

Another question, Do all of you bid/price mulching by the hour or by the square foot, and with hedge trimming do you charge by the hour or what? Just a few things I was wondering....just would like to know your opinions..

For hedge trimming I charge by the hour and then add a small disposal fee depending on the size of brush I have to dump.

If the shrubs have been pruned regularly as individual shrubs and aren't really large I will estimate 5 minutes each for shrubs less than 3' and 10 minutes each for shrubs 3-6'. For larger shrubs or if thinning or rejuvenational pruning is needed I will do it as a time and material job.
Mulching is billed by the square foot. I could see charging by the hour if the customer supplied the mulch but we don't do that.

I have been trimming shrubs and large hedges for so long I can just take a look and bid the job. If your not sure how long it will take or don't have the experience to do so charge by the hour. Most people however will not like the open ended hourly rate and almost all will look for someone else who can give them a bid on the spot. Take the extra time and time yourself, trim different size shrubs and time yourself for each size you do this will give you an idea how long the next job will take.

When we first started this job we made the mistake of charging mulch by the hour. We now charge per yard. Edging is done per lineal foot. Hedgetrimming we still do both ways. We prefer per job but sometime we price per hour.

When I first started, I was hourly for trimming & $/yard on mulch installed. I lost a lot of money on the triming because I work really really fast & do a great job. Now, I have the experience & know-how to look at a job & give them a price on the spot. If I'm a little under it's my own fault & if I'm over, it's money in my pocket. I also make sure I don't tell them how long it will take because when it takes me less time than I expect (which 90% of the time it does) then they want some money knocked off.
