Help with old Kaw and JD

I recently got my hands on an old (1991) JD 48" WB with a floating deck and a 14hp Kawasaki. The previous owner who sold it to me for $100 told me it was running but has sat around his yard for the last six months uncovered. He also advised me that although it will start it will not stay running for more than 10 seconds. I replaced the oil and filter, gas filter, spark plug, air filter, cleaned out the carb completely and replaced the small fuel pump. In addition I took off the gas tank and cleaned it out thoroughly as well as the gas lines. If I use starter fluid it will run a little bit longer but shuts off. I've listed the s/n for the JD and Kaw below:

JD-GX1320x011467
Kaw-EC420VA03032
Code FC420V-AS11

Any ideas on what I should look at next ? Also, what is the proper amount of oil for this engine ?

Thanks in advance for any help I can get.
Hank

Have a spare spark plug in hand, The second it shuts down pop the other plug in the boot then hold the casing to the engine block and check for spark.

This is where a in-line spark tester is handy, Need to see if it's ignition or fuel related.

My guess would be a partly clogged main jet.

If you have a good spark, I'd look for an obstruction in the fuel line.
Maybe remove the fuel line at the carb immediately after it quits and crank the engine over and see if the pump is pushing gas through the line?

My thoughts are that the line is ALMOST totally blocked. When allowed to sit for awhile, enough fuel seeps through to fill the line, but not enough to keep the engine running.

Ok guys,

It's running. This morning I was fustrated because of the rain, taking the carb apart again and cleaning the fuel lines, the darn thing wouldn't start. After looking at it for sometime I tried blowing out the line that runs inside the tank. It started and stayed running on the first pull. I thought (there I go thinking, again) that by dumping the old gas and flushing the tank with new gas there shouldn't have been an issue. It seems the line inside the tank was blocked and only allowed a small amount of gas to get to the fuel pump. Thanks to both of you for your time and knowledge.

Hank
